Jolly

It is quite satisfying to know how to find, and use, the opposing party’s documents against them, for example, to show they have no credibility. Handled correctly, the evidence becomes your arsenal. Some of my biggest wins have come down to that—and will continue to.

Overview

Ronald (Ron) D. Jolly focuses his practice on document review in complex litigation matters.

Ron first became adept at analyzing significant amounts of data and information during his 30-plus year career handling complex litigation representing consumer interests in public utility-related matters, as an attorney for the City of Chicago and the Illinois Attorney General’s office.

Continuing that momentum, Ron very quickly gets up to speed in diverse areas ranging from accounting to finance to engineering. He can also effectively speak to experts in the jargon of their specific industries.

Experience

  • Lead attorney for the City of Chicago and other consumer interest representatives in an investigation of Peoples Gas’s (Chicago’s gas utility) questionable transactions with Enron Corporation.
  • Represented Chicago in negotiations with Peoples Gas resulting in a $100 million refund to customers and a $30 million payment to Chicago for investing in residential energy-efficiency projects.
  • Co-authored report analyzing whether Commonwealth Edison Company (Chicago’s electricity supplier) had complied with its obligations under its franchise agreement with Chicago permitting the utility to use city property to install its infrastructure. The report concluded that ComEd had violated multiple provisions in the agreement, eventually leading to a settlement agreement in which ComEd agreed to pay the City $100 million.
  • Represented the City in a renegotiation of that settlement agreement, which required ComEd to pay Chicago $60 million for investment in various environmental programs.
  • Lead attorney in Chicago’s municipal aggregation program, under which the City negotiated electricity supply for City residential and small commercial customers. The program was estimated to save Chicago customers $120 million during the term of the aggregation provider contract.

Outside the Office

When I’m not working, I read a lot, I bike and I’m a pretty big movie buff—things like noir on Turner Classics, or the films of Stanley Kubrick.
